Iron and Ferritin, Explained in Plain Language

Quick Answer (TL;DR)

Ferritin reflects how much iron you have stored. Low ferritin means depleted stores, often before anaemia appears.

What It Means

Iron studies usually include ferritin, serum iron, transferrin or TIBC, and transferrin saturation. Read together, they separate iron deficiency from other causes of anaemia and from iron overload.

Why It Matters for Your Health

Iron deficiency is a common and very treatable cause of fatigue, breathlessness, hair loss and poor concentration. In adults it also raises the question of where iron is being lost, which sometimes matters more than the number itself.

Recommended Biomarker or Metric to Track

Track ferritin and haemoglobin together, and note any treatment dates.

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

Targeted questions based on latest clinical consensus statements.

1Is my ferritin low, borderline or normal for my situation?
2Should we look for a cause of iron loss?
3Do I need oral iron, and for how long?
4Would an inflammation marker help interpret this?
5When should we recheck?
